Cherokee From Across the Nation Unite at Historic 3-Day Event in Red Clay

Divided by their forced removal in 1838, a tragedy known as the Trail of Tears, members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians and the Cherokee Nation will reunite to commemorate and celebrate the Cherokee Nation at Red Clay State Park in Cleveland, Tennessee April 16-18, 2009. The three-day event is free and open to the public.

A New Year and New Experiences at the Oconaluftee Indian Village

In just a few short weeks – on May 1 to be exact - the Oconaluftee Indian Village opens for its 2009 season. The year is 1759, and it is a time of rapid cultural change, prompted by the influence of the British and their contemporary lifestyle. As a Village guest, you are invited to immerse yourself in Cherokee’s past to gain an understanding of how it shaped their rich traditions and culture. New for 2009 are live reenactments depicting the historical events that transpired in 1759 including war council meetings and conflicts with military expeditions. Guests will brace themselves for an attack by European settlers in the new 20-minute mini-drama “Time of War”.
