8th Annual Talking Trees Trout Derby Introduces Children to the Art of Fishing

Recognized for its exceptional trout waters, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians hosts its 8th Annual Talking Trees Trout Derby on Sat., Aug. 1, 2009 for children ages 3-11 at the Oconaluftee Islands Park in Cherokee, N.C. As many as 2,000 children and their families are expected to participate in the free event that includes hands-on fishing demonstrations, entertainment and a full day of trout fishing. Fishing equipment, breakfast, lunch, t-shirts and more are provided at no cost to the participants.

Qualla Arts & Crafts Launches New Website

Known for its legendary craftsmanship, Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, Inc. just launched its new website, www.quallaartsandcrafts.org.  For the first time, art collectors from around the world can view online what is said to be the largest collection of Cherokee art.  The website is a treasure trove of information about traditional and contemporary Cherokee art, and features extensive and detailed information about member artists, their work, techniques and the Mutual’s fascinating history.

Cherokee Braces for Weekend Infestation

No, not bugs. VW Bugs, vintage and brand new, souped-up and restored! Volkswagen devotees make their way to Cherokee August 15-16, 2009 for the inaugural VW Show at the Cherokee Indian Fair Grounds. Having symbolized summer fun for decades, Volkswagens of all makes and models will be on display all weekend. All registered vehicles are eligible to win cash on the hour, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
